During the 1993-93 Season I was working in Pittsburgh at WPXI-TV covering the Steelers and got to do a couple stories with the Bills, both when they played the Steelers in Buffalo and then in the playoff game in Pittsburgh. Lockeroom interviews with Bruce Smith, Kelly, Tasker and others. It was my first time covering professional sports and when the season ended I started at ESPN and have been covering sports ever since. Over the years we went to many games, and in a weird twist of fate, fast forward 20 years, and I take my father to a game, bought the tickets, the snacks, and that hat. The Bills won snapping a decade long losing streak to the Miami Dolphins, the crowd, not us in it, stormed the field and tore the goalposts down, we sat and watched, smiling and laughing, “…and there goes the goalpost down to the fans in jubulation,” dad was doing “Pops Play-by-Play” into an empty cup. It was the last game we ever attended together. He passed before we could sit in the stands together again. Here’s Jon: “It was classic db, we were at the championship at Hot Springs, I think, and you saw the two of us together and you came over and just kind of looked at us, I told you then we were married, and she told you her name is actually, Valerie.” Since that touney gig for more than a decade now, and they will attest to this, I have called Jon’s wife, a good friend of mine too, this: “Vicky/Valerie,” and will continue to do so. I didn’t know it at the time, but the 2020 Classic would be my last, my contract carried me past this one and on, but COVID hit and shut everything down including me. And it was done. I was on my way out of the auditorium but before going through the curtain and into the backstage bowels for some reason I just stopped, turned around, saw this and snapped the photo. Looking back, I think it was for the best that I didn’t know then that it was over. From 2008 until 2020 I had center stage for all those Classics, it was my job, but it was a blessing as well. Yelling, clapping, a monsoon of confetti. I took a couple of snaps and then backed up against a wall to get out of the way of the onrush to the stage from his team. Yet. No team. Wife and kids, I think but no large group of teammates. Bunch of people not on stage nor back in the bowels of the arena. Just Alton and his family. No benches cleared. No beer or champagne poured on this Alton guy. In a hallway I asked some reporter guy, “When does the guy who won this, when does the rest of his team get here.” All I got was a smirk. I stood in the back of the “presser” listening to the questions, the answers, one eye on the stage, one eye on the door waiting for the rest of the team. Turns out, I was LOOKING at the entire team: Alton and his family. That’s it. This is the exact note I wrote down while standing in the back of the interview room: “These dudes are different.” Seared into my soul that moment was the respect I gained for these guys of this game… …as well as their families. I was the new guy, I get that. I didn’t fish, I never, NEVER understood why that mattered, never got that. I covered the NFL and never once did ESPN ever expect or ask me to suit up and tackle someone. When fish read, I’ll write for them, until… I wrote stuff for W2F for a couple years, but it got tough doing that and 60-70 some columns a year for BASS. I never really felt I was a good fit there, nothing the guys said, they are like family to me, but because they focused more on the technical aspects of fishing. I don’t. Wrong end of the rod for me. These guys though have always been there for me as a friend, although truth in reporting, they damn near killed me on what seemed like a thousand mile walk from one place to another at some Classic somewhere. He could pull an egg, spoon, or once a cigar out of my ear. I was 5 or 6 and giggled when he did it. He had big hands that he could hide lots of objects within. He carried me on his shoulders, held me upside down, got down on all fours so I could ride him like a horse, let me sit in his lap when he drove to the store, blew up balloons for me that smelled like cigars when they popped. My Grandmother, Theresa Long, also from Cayuga, Canada was born in June of 1897. I never saw him alive again (I cried again today when I wrote this line). You want to know what kind of impact he had on my life, when you cry for a man who has been dead for over 60 years, that is the EXACT definition of having an impact on someone.
